Built in 1919, 351 California Street exemplifies the culture of the roaring 20’s and San Francisco’s close ties to maritime commerce. Its construction was commissioned by Captain Robert Dollar’s son, Harold, to serve as an expansion to the Dollar Shipping Company’s headquarters on California Street. The building’s three-story limestone base is accented with Renaissance-Baroque ornamentation,setting the pedestal for 16 stories of concrete construction with a brick façade. At one time the building served as the San Francisco headquarters of the Pacific Bank, and has housed prestigious tenants such as former Mayor Willie Brown.
