Downtown San Mateo is home to over 800 businesses, many of them housed in historic homes and buildings, as well as numerous parks and recreation areas and large and small office buildings. Bay Meadows, a former horse racing track is currently being redeveloped as a large mixed-use development that will house new residential units, office space, retail spaces, parks, and a town square. While completion is slated to occur in 2017, the development will bring much needed space to the city, and possibly drive down rental rates as more availability occurs.
