BD Biosciences — a division of Becton, Dickinson and Company — recently announced that it had chosen Torrey View by Breakthrough for its expanded San Diego Reagent Innovation Center. Breakthrough is a leading developer of life sciences properties and is a joint venture of Bellco Capital and Tishman Speyer.

Torrey View is a world-class life sciences research and development campus sitting on 10 acres and incorporating some of the most modern San Diego office space in the Del Mar Heights life sciences cluster. The property is being co-developed by Mitsui Fudosan America and Breakthrough. Torrey View will feature three research and development buildings, in addition to a tenant clubhouse. When it’s completed in the second half of next year, BD Biosciences is set to occupy 220,000 square feet — the largest building.

“We are thrilled to welcome BD Biosciences to Torrey View and the broader Breakthrough family,” said Susie Harborth, executive vice president for operations at Breakthrough Properties. “BD is exactly the type of dynamic and fast-growing firm we had in mind when we set out to create this life science campus. We are honored and proud to support a company that plays such a critical role in advancing the world of health.”

Breakthrough is also packing impressive amenities into Torrey View, with state-of-the-art event and conference facilities, multiple dining options, pickleball courts, surfboard and bike storage, onsite below ground parking, and a fitness center designed by Jay Wright. Green spaces will also surround the property, which will be landscaped with drought-tolerant plants, pedestrian and bike pathways, and a series of informal gathering areas. Every aspect has been optimized to inspire interaction, collaboration, and innovation.

“Our new facility in San Diego will aid in elevating our research, development and operations capabilities and position BD for exciting growth,” said Puneet Sarin, worldwide president for BD Biosciences. “BD Biosciences is a cornerstone of BD’s purpose to advance the world of health, providing researchers with innovative tools that drive a deeper understanding of the immune system and unlock its unique power to fight disease. We are pleased to select the Torrey View by Breakthrough campus to house this dynamic work now and in the future. The campus will accommodate a flexible working environment, support collaboration and innovation, and serve our desire to attract and retain the best talent for years to come.”

The Torrey View site was acquired in October 2020 by Breakthrough and is designed to meet LEED Gold standards. Breakthrough is also working with life science architectural firm FLAD Architects and general contractor Clark Construction to meet and exceed these standards. Marketing and leasing of Torrey View will be handled by Jones Lang LaSalle’s senior life science team in San Diego.
