Located just inside the San Francisco Bay area, Vallejo California is a city rising from the ashes. While the city declared bankruptcy in 2008, that has not stopped the citizens of the town from continuing to fight for their city and make it a true community. Now participating in Participatory Budgeting, one of the only places in the country to do so, Vallejo is growing its economy, slowly but surely, which makes renting office space in the area relatively cheap for the Bay Area. Vallejo at a Glance

Twice serving as the capitol of California, before it was moved permanently to Sacramento, Vallejo was once part of a huge Mexican land grant and was later founded on a hill that was strategically located and could see the city of San Francisco on a clear day. After the city refused to build a capitol building for the legislators, they moved from the leaking building provided to them for a new session in Sacramento, closing the chapter of Vallejo as the capital of the newest American state at the time.

While the city did file for bankruptcy in 2008, the experimental Participatory Budgeting process has seen great benefits for the city, as a community and for economic growth. In Participatory Budgeting, a large portion of the city's’ budget is set aside for debate and vote by members of the community. Community members and business owners develop project ideas that are then voted on by citizens 16 and older.

Where to rent in Vallejo

There are five main neighborhoods in Vallejo; West Vallejo, East Vallejo, North Vallejo, South Vallejo, and Mare Island. West Vallejo is the oldest neighborhood and home to the historic district, while development stalled during the bankruptcy process, preservation and improvements have picked by up within the last two years. East Vallejo is the largest and most populated of the neighborhoods and contains the newest construction and development. South Vallejo also contains a large number of historic buildings and homes and enjoys panoramic views of the area since it includes the highest ground in the city. Mare Island was home to the oldest Naval base west of the Mississippi until its closure in 1996. With the low rental rates, and numerous neighborhoods to choose from, Vallejo offers much to those considering renting office space in the area.
